Exactly 100 women stopped by the event to meet 7 chapters that were either on the PHC, NPHC, or MGC Councils! It sounded like everyone had great conversations and were able to start recruiting some of these women in the coming weeks. The event was casual and lasted two hours, but hopefully that short amount of time will bring lifelong friendships to these chapters and women who attended the event!

(Above)

The women of Delta Zeta, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Delta Delta Delta, Alpha Delta Pi, Sigma Lambda Gamma, and Alpha Xi Delta introduce themselves to potential new members! This spring the University of Iowa Sorority Life wants to help students in making something deeper than just new friendships; we want to help making new sisters! If you are a woman on campus who hasn't joined or considered Greek Life yet, now is your opportunity! There will be PHC, MGC, and NPHC sororities at the Spring Sorority Open House for you to meet and express your interest in. From 7-9 on Thursday, January 26th the sororities on campus that are still recruiting this spring will be meeting in the Lucas-Dodge room on the second floor of the IMU. Only sororities that aren't currently at total will be present. Dress is casual and the event is come-and-go, The sororities will each have women you can talk to as well as information about their chapters. You also do not have to go meet all chapters during this event and it is not structured, but we encourage you to check out all the sororities because you will be seeing their faces around in the Greek Community. There will be light refreshments provided as well! Please come and meet the women of the PHC, MGC, and NPHC sororities and pass along the word. There will be an all undergraduate e-mail sent out this week as well reminding students of the details of the event.

For any questions, please contact rachel-zeitlin@uiowa.edu

We will not be announcing or disclosing what chapters will be at the Open House in advance.

All-Greek Event: 80s Prom!

Welcome back to the University of Iowa! Every year, we hold our annual Fiesta! This year was our 4th year and the event was so successful! In the past 4 years, we have raised about $10,000 dollars, all benefiting our local Ronald McDonald House at The University of Iowa! If you missed our Fiesta, make sure to stop by next year and enjoy some yummy Mexican food like Panchero’s and El Dorado and help support the local chapter of the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Alpha Delta Pi is proud of its long-standing relationship with the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). 1979 was when our partnership began and Alpha Delta Pi has contributed more than $5 million to this organization. The mission of RMHC is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children. RMHC makes an immediate, positive impact on children’s lives through its global network of chapters. Today, over 300 Ronald McDonald Houses can be found in 52 countries. The main function is to provide comfort, care and "a home-away-from-home" for the families of seriously ill children who are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

Along with our major philanthropy event in the fall and minor event in the spring, we also volunteer our time by working at the Ronald McDonald house. Once a week, an ADPi sister can be found there, cleaning, cooking and even playing with the children. You can even find us making Valentine’s Day cards and passing out Halloween candy! Some upcoming event’s that we are looking forward to are a cookie decorating party in December! I for one love getting over there as much as possible. It is so rewarding knowing that the work done is helping not only the children, but the families as well!

You don’t have to be an ADPi to help out with RMHC, by saving your pop tabs, you are helping out this special cause! This weekend we held our first ever “Trick Or Treat With Tri-Delta” philanthropy at our house to raise money for the Saint Jude foundation, as well as to raise money for our very own Tri-Delta Bailey Bargloff. Bailey was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin's Disease in July and unfortunately could not come back to school this semester. She has received extensive medical care these last few months, and lots of medical care = lots of medical costs. We have been trying to help her out with her medical expenses by selling “Believe For Bailey” tanks and bracelets.

Serious diseases and catastrophes are always more real when it happens to someone close to you. Since Bailey’s diagnosis, our house has grown much stronger and closer. Cancer is a real part of our lives now, and we are so blessed to be able to raise money for both Bailey and the kids supported by our philanthropy Saint Jude.

At "Trick Or Treat With Tri-Delta," there were plenty of kids sporting their Halloween costumes and lining up to bob for apples, compete in a pie eating contest, and get their faces painted. And right behind these kiddies were G-Phis, Pikes, Sig Eps, and many other Greeks who came out to support our cause. Although our philanthropy was aimed mostly at the kids in Iowa City, it felt great to see different Greek houses coming together to support Saint Jude’s and Bailey.

During my shift at the pie-eating contest table, I witnessed many fellow Greeks chow down on pure whipped cream in order to show their support for our philanthropy. I was also able to watch about 30 fraternity men get cat whiskers and noses painted on their faces at the face-painting table and witnessed numerous amusing attempts of Greeks trying to bob for apples. In those hilarious moments, I was reminded why I decided to do Greek life here at Iowa. Watching other houses getting involved in our philanthropy reinforced the unity that we are lucky to have here at Iowa among our Greek houses.

Therefore, I would like to thank all of the Greeks who came to support Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Believe For Bailey. I would also like to commend the winners of our bobbing for apples contests, pie eating contests, and our raffles. We could not support those in need without the support of our fellow Greeks. Thank you everyone for reaffirming why I am so proud to be a part of the Greek community here at Iowa.

margin-bottom: 14pt; margin-top: 14pt; text-indent: 36pt;">During sorority recruitment, one thing that nearly every chapter talked about was something called Dance Marathon. I had no idea what it was all about, but I knew everyone loved it so it must be something worthwhile.

Soon after I joined my sorority, one of the sophomores that was a “Morale Captain” talked at meeting about being a dancer in her group for Dance Marathon. At the time I had no idea that joining this organization would make such an impact in my life.

Other than the giant 24 hour party that everyone described it as, I then got all the details on how Dance Marathon is the largest student run philanthropy on campus, and how much is does for the pediatric oncology patients and their families receiving treatments at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

Words can’t even describe the way I felt during the Big Event. I got to see and hear firsthand what all the children and families go through, and see how much Dance Marathon impacts their lives too. Being able to see the genuine gratitude the families have for Dance Marathon and all of the dancers was unbelievable.

24 hours and a few boxes of Kleenex later, I knew I had to get more involved. I decided to apply for Family Relations Committee, and over the past two years I’ve been a part of first Family Programming, and now Hospital Committee. At the Big Event, it was the families that inspired me, and now I get to spend as much time as I want playing with the kiddos up in the hospital. Over the past two years, I’ve formed friendships with not only with other dancers and people on my committee, but with the families as well.

I definitely have the Greek community to thank for this one. The Greeks are such strong supporters of Dance Marathon, and thankfully my chapter encouraged me to join because it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
<div style="font-family: Tahoma; This past weekend, we partnered up with the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the UI Men’s Anti-Violence Council to bring the first ever men’s march against rape, sexual assault, and gender violence: “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes.” The men in the march were encouraged to wear heels in order to experience the pain that women of rape, sexual assault, and gender violence go through. And, believe me, they were rockin’ the red heels as we walked through Iowa City.

All the money that we raised goes to RVAP (Rape Victim Advocacy Program), which is a sexual assault crisis center based in Iowa City. RVAP provides crisis line support, advocacy, and education services to citizens in Iowa and the UI community.

The event was a complete success, bringing in not only over 150 people, but also the press! We gained coverage not only in the Press-Citizen but the Daily Iowan as well. Read and see a little video about us in the news http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/College-Men-Walk-In-Heels-For-Good-Cause--130920323.html! After the walk, there was an educational from the President of the Men’s Anti-Violence Council. He really put the walk into context and gave us and other members of the community options on how to stay involved and continue helping against this very serious issue.

After the walk and seeing the amount of people (and men actually wearing heels) that came out and supported this issue, really made me realize the power of people. As cheesy as that sounds, its true. Starting something like what we did on Saturday with just one other UI group and one other fraternity, really showed the impact we can have, especially if we work together. I think that too often people just join sororities and fraternities and live in their own little bubble, thinking only of the social aspects that Greek life offers. After this past weekend, it really opened my eyes to the endless amount of possibilities we as Greek life can do and not only within the UI community, but in the Iowa City community as well. So, LETS GO GREEKS! <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; Over five years ago my sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, was struck by a tornado. The house was torn to pieces, so the girls packed up and went to live at a temporary house on campus.

When I first came to the University of Iowa I had never heard about this incident, which isn’t surprising since I didn’t know much about Greek life in general. When I first walked into Alpha Chi Omega during recruitment, I saw girls wearing red heels and saw a spiral staircase resembling a yellow brick road. I understood the theme “There’s No Place Like Home” but didn’t know how much this phrase really meant to these girls.

The house was beautiful; it was brick, it was big, and it was the only house I had ever heard of with an elevator, but it was obvious to me their was more to the house than simple appearance.

Now I am a Junior, and all of the older members I knew who knew the girls that were in the tornado have graduated, leaving us with stories to pass on to the new Alpha Chi’s. This year at recruitment we decided to leave our red heels behind. It was time to show that our chapter is more than just a house and we look back on the previous years with admiration for all the Alpha Chi Omega alumni who stood strong during a tough time.

Recruitment this year was even better for me than years in the past. Instead of being a sophomore who was new to the process of being “on the other side of recruitment,” I was able to help guide girls and tell them how everything works.

Everyone has a little nervousness alongside their excitement during recruitment, but I can honestly say it was the best feeling in the world. We pushed through recruitment strong—a handful of people got sick, a couple lost their voices, but in the end we all agreed it was well worth it to welcome home 38 wonderful women into our chapter.

These 38 women are now not only a part of our Sigma Chapter on campus, but they are a part of a national sorority. Alpha Chi Omega was established in 1911 and in less than a month we get to celebrate our centennial with Alpha Chi Omega alumni from all over the country.

I never knew a sorority could impact my life like Alpha Chi Omega has. Being in this chapter has taught me so much about myself and about my sisters. When I first walked into the house I immediately was comfortable and knew the girls were looking to be my friend. I have met such a diverse group of women and have been fortunate enough to meet women from other chapters as well by being involved in Greek life.

I have lived in the house for two years now and am happy to be able to call the Alpha Chi Omega house my home, because after a long day of work, school, and stress, there’s no better place to come to then home to your sisters.

-Jenny Earl

Jenny is a member of Alpha Chi Omega.

All of my girl friends from high school went to every other school except for Iowa. After moving into Currier, a girl on my floor convinced me to go through recruitment. I can honestly say it was the best decision I've ever made. In less than a few weeks, I went from no girlfriends at Iowa to over 100. The girl that initially convinced me to go through formal recruitment joined a different chapter than I did, which actually ended up being great. Most girls think that they need to join the chapter that they know the most girls from, or which chapter they heard is the best. I'm glad that I never listened to anyone else's opinion on the different chapters. Make the choice for yourself. The right fit will find you. This girl from my freshman year is now one of my best friends to this day, and all of her friends from her chapter are great friends of mine as well. The Greek community works so well together. It doesn't matter what house you choose, all the women will accept you. You will only feel at home in your chapter when you choose it for yourself.

-Laura Blunk

Laura is a member of Gamma Phi Beta.

Transferring & Going Greek

Go Green! Go White! Wait a minute, which school do I go to? As an anxious incoming freshman two years ago, I was on my way to Michigan State University with one thing on my mind—survive. I made it through my first month, when unexpectedly I received a letter explaining the dismal fate of my major (Speech Pathology). It was to be cut along with many other respectable majors due to finical burdens on the university, and left me choosing between changing majors and transferring schools. I knew I wouldn’t change my mind on becoming a speech pathologist, so with that knowledge I quickly began to re-apply to another university I felt a similar bond with before—Iowa. It was the hardest decision of my life to leave all the wonderful friends I made at MSU, but I knew it was the best thing for my education to transfer. Midway through my freshman year I made the move into Slater Hall on Iowa’s campus. I was extremely lonely and nervous about meeting new friends because unlike others, I was starting all over and no one would be “in the same boat” as me. The first few weeks I felt very distant from everyone in my hall since they had already made friends, so I kept to myself most of the time. I decided this wasn’t the positive bubbly person I was known to be, so I thought I needed to get more involved. That is when I made the decision to join a sorority—what better way to meet new people, be involved, and feel like you belong. I joined my sorority and instantly felt Iowa’s campus shrink to a manageable size with the love and support of my new sisters who were there to introduce me to all Iowa has to offer. Joining my sorority at Iowa made me feel right at home and gave me a second chance to form lifelong friendships and begin a new journey even better than the first. Two years later, my love for my sisters has grown beyond measure and the amazing memories I have will always remind me of how they were there for me when I needed them most in my first few months at Iowa. I wouldn’t trade my sisters for the world, and now I wear my gold and black proudly with a smile which wont fade. Go Hawkeyes!

-Lauren Diamond

Lauren is a member of Alpha Chi Omega.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uiowaphc.blogspot.com/2011/06/transferring-going-greek.html' title='Transferring & For months leading up to the conference, I was working really hard on putting some tentative plans together to be able to show the women from our Internationals how hard I’d been working. Boy, did I have a reality check once I got there!

All women in the position of Vice President of Membership Recruitment for their chapters and those from Alpha Phi International had the privilege of staying in the Alpha Phi house at Boulder, and it was b-e-a-utiful! My jaw dropped immediately as we pulled up to the outside of the house. We started working right as we walked inside. I met my personal coach for the weekend and we got to talking about my chapter and things that have gone on during Work Week and Recruitment weekends in the past.

This is basically what we did all weekend long; compare our previous recruitment process, pros and cons, to what we should be doing to improve. I learned SO much that weekend about my chapter. I am so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to attend because I know I will use my new knowledge to make our next formal recruitment process, and those in the future, so great! I can’t wait to show my sisters all I learned in August!

-Rachel Zeitlin

Rachel is a member of Alpha Phi.

Greek Week Success

I am proud to say that we organized a successful week, and even prouder of every single member of the community who contributed to the great success. We donated over 300 pints of blood at the blood drive. Juniors and seniors had the opportunity to learn proper etiquette for formal business settings. We had a great turnout at the Fraternity & Sorority Life Town Hall Meeting where many of our members got to learn more about all four councils here at the University of Iowa. We were able to raise AIDs awareness in Africa as we had members write letters to our congressmen. We had beautiful weather for Greek Olympics! We donated $2,670.86 for the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation through Penny Wars, thanks to the Multicultural Greek Council. To close out the week, Follies ran smoothly and each chapter pairing came up with innovative and entertaining skits.

All throughout the week, I was particularly proud of my own chapter for how determined they were to participate in each event and how proud they were to wear their letters. When Rachel Grim, Greek Week Operations Director, and I went up on stage at Follies to announce the overall winners, she would not let me see the results. She announced overall winners for third place, and then I announced overall winners for second place. She uncovered the overall winners for first place, and when I saw “Delta Zeta and Phi Delta Theta,” I couldn’t help but to leap in the air out of excitement and happiness, revealing to the entire crowd even before she announced us as the winners. Two days later, Delta Zeta dominated at Phi Delta Theta’s Tug Fest, placing first and third at their philanthropy. I kept joking about how Dr. Guy Potter Benton, a member of Phi Delta Theta who helped Delta Zeta’s founders establish our sorority, would be so proud.

It was definitely a remarkable experience having the opportunity to help organize and plan Greek Week, and then being able to watch my own chapter do so well all throughout the week. I have an immense amount of pride for my chapter after Greek Week, and I truly hope that every single member of the Fraternity and Sorority Community feels the same way about his or her own chapter.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 14pt; But I have never been more proud than when I was sitting in the Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards, as a member of my chapter’s exec board, and Chi Omega was called for Chapter of the Year. The lump in my heart that formed when they described the award finally subsided and was replaced with excitement, and genuine joy. It was so hard not to grab my cell phone and text all of my sisters to share the news with them-okay, maybe I texted a couple people right away!

Although our reasoning for working hard is not specifically to win awards, it feels great to be recognized for a year’s hard work. Throughout the year, our chapter strives to be well rounded, and excel in all areas of Greek life, whether it may be philanthropy, scholarship or sisterhood. I think we’ve been so successful this year because every member is on the same page, and understands the level that needs to be achieved in order for success.

Every member contributed to winning chapter of the year whether their role in our chapter was big or small. I would like to especially thank the people who put in more than their fair share of time and energy: our current and former exec board, cardinal cabinet directors, and our FABULOUS advisors Ann and Stacy.

-Jessie Tobin

Jessie Tobin is a member of Chi Omega.

Networking Success

Network. This is a word I have heard a lot recently. As I set out to find an internship for the summer, everyone I spoke with told me they got their job through networking. Not sure where to start, I searched online and applied for as many internships as possible.

At the end of fall semester one of the members of my sorority gave a presentation to our chapter about the internship she had at Target. BAM! She had my attention. I love Target and the internship sounded like an incredible experience. In the beginning of February I went to the Communication and Media Internship Fair at the Pomerantz Center. There I was given the opportunity to speak with the Iowa Target recruiter. Since I wanted to get a job near my hometown, she recommended I attend the Spring Job and Internship Fair later that month and speak to the Chicago recruiter. The day of the fair rolled around and I made an instant connection with the recruiter; who also happened to be an Alpha Phi! There it was—the connection I had been waiting for. After an extensive interview process, they offered me the internship.

Had it not been for my sorority sister talking about the internship, I do not think I would have given Target as much consideration as I did. I just had a great connection with the Chicago recruiter, which made it easy for me to interview with her and establish a relationship. Even though she did not attend the University of Iowa, we are still sisters who will do anything for each other. I encourage all of you to talk to your sisters to find out what jobs and internships they have had, and to network, network, and network some more. Apply to as many internships as you can and eventually, you too will be on your way to finding an internship.

-Amanda Lee

Amanda Lee is a member of Alpha Phi.

Making a Difference

This semester I was asked what my best decision in college has been so far. It didn’t require more than a moments time for me to answer ‘joining a sorority’. Being a part of Zeta Tau Alpha has influenced my college experience beyond measure. The number of friends I have met, leadership experiences I have obtained, and networking opportunities I have encountered have been remarkable. But my favorite part is the number of occurrences I have been able to make a difference in other’s lives. Every sorority and fraternity has a philanthropic organization that they choose to raise money towards. Zeta Tau Alpha works with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. So far this year, we held restaurant community days, sold valentines between chapters, and held our annual ZTA 5K. The 5K event is a huge day for the Iowa City community. It is inspirational to see so many college students group together to fight against a disease that affects so many of our sisters, mothers, and grandmothers. Occasionally, survivors of breast cancer will come to our race and thank us for all the work we put in. Seeing their tears in their eyes makes me feel that I am really making a difference in their lives. Being in a sorority has provided me the opportunity to be a part of something larger than the everyday college experience. I encourage everyone to go through recruitment and get to know all the chapters, because you can make a difference too!

-Camille Claussen

Camille Claussen is a member of Zeta Tau Alpha.

Welcome

Welcome to the blog for the University of Iowa's Panhellenic Council!
